In 2012, Samir Mazer set himself a singular challenge : to deconstruct the traditional language of zellige and explore new possibilities for this noble material. At the time, convincing an artisan to cut anything other than an established traditional pattern seemed almost impossible. It took nearly five years of dialogue, trials, and perseverance before the first new forms could emerge from the workshop.
This slow process remains at the heart of Ateliers Zelij. The workshop is a place where time is allowed to unfold, where ideas mature through making, and where every form is tested against the reality of the material. Creation is not the search for novelty but the patient pursuit of what feels inevitable.
Only after years of exploration does a pattern sometimes reveal itself with complete clarity. What appears effortless is often the result of a long journey. The right form is not invented; it is discovered. When it finally emerges, it carries the quiet evidence of something that could not have been otherwise.
